Viaduc de Millau (via londondan)

I have been here, and this photograph does not do it justice. Somewher over the little hill in the foreground there is an observation station and a little building dedicated to the story and the how-to of the bridge’s construction. The reason there is an observation station for this bridge is that it is absolutely massive. It cuts across this valley with a river in it, and rather than just build a bridge over the river, they built the bridge over the entire valley, from hilltop to hilltop. The height to the top of those towers is taller than the Eiffel Tower, almost as tall as the Empire State Building. This giant, gleaming, modern bridge in the middle of this green valley; it looks like something landed there from the future. It’s very strange, as are a lot of things in France—or really, a lot of things all over the world, I’m sure. I haven’t ever been able to decide if I think it’s beautiful, visually appealing, but it is certainly stunning, and like I said, I don’t think this picture really captures it. The towers look like futuristic starship sails, the pylons are huge, the cars look like little toys, and I wonder what the view from the bridge looks like. I’ve only seen it from the approach, from the observation station below. We didn’t cross it.
